Make the Most of Midsummer

Make the Most of Midsummer

It’s officially Midsummer, or as some call it, the “Dog Days”. But before you slide into a summer slump, take a look around Harrisonburg – this is still a full and vibrant calendar of summer events and festivals to keep you entertained throughout the season. This can be the best part of summer in the Shenandoah Valley! Get out and enjoy some of these fun events:

The hottest ticket in the Valley is the Rockingham County Fair. Enjoy delicious food, great live music, livestock shows, a rodeo, carnival rides and more. As one of the premiere agricultural venues in the region, you can be sure that the whole family will have the opportunity to learn, experience country living, and enjoy the products of our outstanding region.

Harrisonburg Oyster and Wine FestivalThe fair isn’t the only must-visit festival happening in August – foodies should make a plan to attend the Sunny Slope Farm Oyster and Wine Festival to enjoy oyster cuisine, fine wine, live music and art. Let the kids stay up late to gaze at the stars and learn about them at the Shenandoah Park Night Sky Festival. Or if the family prefers to enjoy music, fresh new songwriting, and a celebration of faith, make sure to get your tickets to the Sing Me High festival to experience some of the best faith-based music in the Valley.

If you prefer to avoid the crowds and enjoy nature, book a trip with Mossy Creek Fly Fishing. Even a beginner can enjoy the peaceful beauty and the chance to escape while fishing the freestone mountain streams of The George Washington National Forest and Shenandoah National Park. If you don’t catch anything, you can stop in at Clementine’s for live music and delicious food that will make you glad you don’t have to clean a trout for dinner.

Beans and Brews Festival, Harrisonburg, VaWhen the summer heat makes it miserable to go outside, opt for some indoor fun at Ruby’s Arcade. In addition to their yummy wood grilled pizza and wide selection of games (electronic and otherwise), Ruby’s also hosts Tournaments. Grab the kids or a few friends and try to win prizes for bowling, air hockey, ping pong and pool while you enjoy the air conditioning.

Harrisonburg is the home of great beer, so summer wouldn’t be the same without a chili cookoff hosted by Brothers Craft Brewery. The Beans and Brew Fest allows home brewers and chili chefs to share their creations and win best in show. Enjoy the award winning creations at this great family friendly event right in the heart of Harrisonburg.

So make a plan and make the most of the “Dog Days” of summer!
